In February 2020, Samsung launched the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. It was the band’s first phone to offer 8K video recording and one the first phones in the market to offer the feature. It has been more than five years since then, and Apple’s iPhones are yet to offer this feature. Well, it looks like that’s finally going to change later this year.
On Weibo, an account that goes by Fixed Focus Digital claims that Apple’s upcoming lineup of smartphones, the iPhone 17 series, will allow people to record videos in 8K resolution. If that turns out to be true, the Cupertino-based tech giant will be more than five years late to the party compared to the South Korean tech giant.
Reason why Apple hasn't offered 8K video recording on iPhones till now
The 8K resolution (7,680 x 4,320 pixels) translates to approximately 33.2 megapixels. It means that for a camera sensor to offer 8K video recording, it needs to have a resolution of 33.2MP or higher. In Apple’s current lineup of phones, the iPhone 16 series, all models have a 48MP camera at the rear. However, not all the rear cameras on these devices have a 48MP resolution. Take the iPhone 16 Pro Max, for example. Its primary and ultra-wide cameras have 48MP resolution, but the telephoto camera is limited to 12MP resolution.
It means that if Apple wanted to offer 8K video recording on these phones, it could do so only with select cameras. That’s something the brand wants to avoid. It prefers offering an 8K video recording with all the rear cameras in the classic Apple fashion. It means that it has to offer all cameras with 48MP resolution to achieve its goal. Reports suggest that it is what Apple is going to do with the iPhone 17 series. Offer 48MP resolution for all the cameras at the rear and then leverage them to offer 8K video recording.
Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy S25 Ultra, offer 8K video recording at up to 30 frames per second. Apple, on the other hand, may prefer a smoother, 60-FPS frame rate. If it offers that, Apple fans will justify the brand for delaying offering this feature. It will then pressurize Samsung to offer 8K video recording at 60 frames per second frame rate, which will benefit Samsung fans massively. Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 series in September of this year.
