Besides its substantially lower price, the Galaxy XR had a few other advantages over Apple’s Vision Pro headset. One of those was the presence of a native YouTube app with XR optimizations. However, that advantage has now disappeared, as the Vision Pro has received its own native YouTube app for video streaming.
Google has released a native YouTube app for visionOS, allowing all Vision series mixed-reality headsets to stream videos without relying on a web browser. In addition to providing access to subscriptions, watch history, playlists, and YouTube Shorts, the app is well suited for viewing 3D, 360-degree, and 180-degree virtual reality (VR) videos.
On the latest Vision Pro headset, which features the M5 processor, the YouTube app also supports 8K video playback, offering excellent clarity. YouTube likely has the largest library of 180-degree, 360-degree, 3D, and 8K videos, making the launch of this app a significant benefit for Vision Pro users.
As a result, the Galaxy XR no longer holds this advantage over the Vision Pro. It remains to be seen whether Google will introduce additional features to the YouTube app for Android XR–powered devices in the future.
