Samsung warns about fake Galaxy devices flooding online markets

Illegitimate enterprises will always try to imitate original successful products or services. It happens all the time, and copycats exist in almost every field and market niche. In the mobile segment, there are those who try to copy Samsung, and some do it more blatantly than others.

Samsung recently issued a warning through its support page in Australia and raised awareness of marketplace listings of counterfeit Samsung devices.

The company says that these non-genuine Samsung products have been showing up at online places such as Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, and others. Here is what Samsung's support alert said:

Please be aware that there have been reports of listings on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and other Marketplace platforms in which private sellers are advertising mobile phones claiming to be genuine Samsung products. These devices are counterfeit and bear Samsung’s registered trademarks.

If you're in the market for a new Samsung device, the company recommends going through official channels, such as its own online store and retail partners. Copycat device sellers may tempt you through much lower prices, but it's best to be safe than sorry.

To avoid purchasing a fake product, we strongly recommend buying only from our official Samsung Online store or authorized retail partners to ensure the authenticity of your Samsung product.

Some fakes are constantly improving and getting closer to imitating the original product, at least on the surface, but they'll never be as good and reliable as the genuine ones.

Fake Galaxy phones, for example, may look the part, especially in online pictures. However, they'll never replace the real thing. They are made cheaply, most of the time using underpowered hardware, and they lack the Samsung software experience.

Copycat devices can take all shapes and forms, but if you are looking for a cheaper used phone, consider Samsung's Certified Re-Newed program (where available) as an alternative to buying from private sellers online. Samsung's Certified Re-Newed phones come with a warranty, a new battery, 100% genuine parts, and a new IMEI installed.

If you are going to buy a Samsung device from a private seller, you'll do it at your own risk, but we recommend you exercise diligence. Look for any signs of foul play. Check the seller's ratings, reviews, history, and so on. If anything looks fishy, avoid the offer, no matter how tempting it might be.
