Google’s GenAI-powered virtual assistant, Gemini, can work with various first-party, as well as third-party services and apps, such as Google Maps and Spotify, with the help of their extensions. Well, Google has now decided to stop calling them extensions. Instead, the brand is now calling them apps. That’s right. Not extensions, which they are, but apps, which they aren’t.
As spotted by 9To5Google, in the latest beta version of the Google app for Android (version 16.8), Gemini’s extensions are termed as ‘apps.’ You will be able to see the latest change in two places, the account menu and the page for accessing the extensions. However, the icon for ‘Apps’ in the account menu still resembles extensions. You can check it out in the images below.

We have discovered that the change is also live on Gemini for the web. When you click on the settings icon in the bottom-left of the page, you will see ‘Apps’ instead of ‘Extensions’ as you used to see earlier. However, its icon too resembles extensions, which suggests that Google has made this change in haste. There’s no information why the brand has decided to do so.
Speaking of extensions, Gemini now works with Samsung’s services and apps on Galaxy devices, including Samsung Calendar, Samsung Clock, Samsung Notes, and Samsung Reminders. This allows you to use the AI assistant for a wider array of tasks. It is also worth pointing out that Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series will soon get Gemini’s live video and screen share for free.
