Samsung's new Onyx cinema displays have 4K 120Hz and HDR
Today, Samsung revealed its latest-generation Onyx displays for movie theatres. They are the world's first DCI-certified LED-based cinema displays and offer an immersive experience. The company claims its new displays offer true blacks, infinite contrast ratio, and “exception color accuracy,” similar to OLED screens.

They feature 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate for sharp and fluid visuals. The displays also feature HDR and a peak brightness of up to 300 nits. Hence, they offer striking highlights and a wider dynamic range. They natively support scope (2.39:1) and flat (1.85:1) aspect ratios, and Samsung is offering them in four different sizes listed below to suit a variety of movie theatre sizes.
- 5 meters (16 feet) with a pixel pitch of 1.25mm
- 10 meters (33 feet) with a pixel pitch of 2.5mm
- 14 meters (46 feet) with a pixel pitch of 3.3mm
- 20 meters (66 feet) with a pixel pitch of 5.0mm

Support for a 120Hz refresh rate ensures that concerts, gaming events, and live sports are displayed with the full immersiveness. Samsung is also offering a auto calibration tool that allows theatres to easily calibrate the displays after installation and routine maintenance.

The new Onyx displays are compatible with Dolby and GDC media servers for seamless content playback and transition from a projector-based system. These screens are compatible with Dolby Atmos, Meyer Sound, QSC and custom sound systems, but they offer better integration with Harman's JBL surround sound systems. You should know that Harman is owned by Samsung.
Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “The cinema industry is shifting its focus towards delivering a more immersive and visually captivating experience. With Onyx, Samsung delivers not only the highest-quality visuals but also the flexibility that allows theaters to redefine the movie-going experience and cater to evolving audience expectations.“
