Under-display cameras are the ultimate solution to the dreaded notch/hole-punch design language that has plagued most modern-day smartphones. It is quite tricky to get right, as the light has to pass through an extra layer of glass. Image quality concerns aside, another concern around the tech is if it disrupts the all-screen look in a meaningful way. There’s only one way to find out.
Lo and behold, here’s the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s under-display camera in action for the first time:
As you can see in the GIF above, the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s under-panel camera blends into the screen for the most part. Immersion shouldn’t be a problem, as your peripheral vision will almost certainly miss it while consuming content, just like how the crease isn’t noticeable most of the time on the Galaxy Fold or Galaxy Z Fold 2.
The image below shows how the module camouflages itself even when the rear cameras are engaged even within the camera app. Samsung has figured out how to keep the under-display sensor hidden unless the selfie camera is actively used.
As far as the actual image quality is concerned, you may have to wait a bit longer to see it in action. We know that the camera has a 4MP resolution, f 1.8 aperture and 2 microns pixel size. The large sensor size should somewhat compensate for the raw megapixel count. Watch out for our in-depth Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 review to find out how it fares in the real world.
