Samsung’s ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor to debut inside Xiaomi smartphone

Samsung revealed its second-generation 50MP camera sensor yesterday. The new sensor brings autofocus and HDR improvements over the ISOCELL GN1 50MP sensor that was launched last year. It has now been revealed that Samsung’s ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor will debut inside a Xiaomi smartphone this year.

According to a tweet from IceUniverse (@UniverseIce), the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra will be the first smartphone to use the 50MP ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor. The smartphone was leaked a few days ago, featuring a triple-camera setup. It is expected to feature a 50MP primary camera, a 48MP telephoto camera with a 5x periscope lens, and a 48MP ultrawide camera. At the front, the phone has a 20MP selfie camera.

Other features of the upcoming Xiaomi phone include a Snapdragon 888 processor, a 6.81-inch QHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Harman Kardon stereo speakers, IP68 rating, 5,000mAh battery, 67W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, 10W reverse wireless charging, and a secondary display beside the rear camera setup. The phone runs Android 11 with MIUI 12.5.

The ISOCELL GN2 sensor has a 50MP resolution, 1.4µm pixels, Dual Pixel Pro autofocus, Smart ISO, Smart ISO Pro, staggered HDR, and 4-in-1 pixel binning (effectively 12.5MP images with 2.8μm pixels). It can record 4K videos at 120fps and Full HD 1080p videos at 480fps. It can also capture 100MP images, thanks to its re-mosaic algorithm. Samsung claims that it offers faster and more reliable autofocus and improved HDR performance.

Xiaomi has always been among the first smartphone brands in the world to use new ISOCELL camera sensors from Samsung. The Redmi Note 7 was the first to use Samsung’s ISOCELL GM1 48MP sensor, while the Redmi Note 8 Pro was the first to use the ISOCELL GW1 64MP sensor. Samsung’s first 108MP sensor, the ISOCELL HMX, debuted with the Mi Note 10.
