Samsung’s new OLED panel for laptops reaches 1,600 nits peak brightness

Samsung’s new OLED panel for laptops reaches 1,600 nits peak brightness

A few days ago, the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced DisplayHDR True Black 1400, a new display certification for OLED panels that can reach peak brightness of up to 1,400 nits while displaying perfect blacks. Today, Samsung Display announced its first OLED panel to receive the new certification.

Samsung Display has started mass-producing the world's first laptop OLED panel with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. It is a tandem OLED panel that can reach peak brightness of up to 1,400 nits in a 10% window, meaning 10% of the screen area. This is 40% higher than previous OLED panels that used a single emissive layer.

Samsung claims that the new panel can reach peak brightness of up to 1,600 nits in a smaller window size. The South Korean firm achieved this using two organic emissive layers and new materials. Combined with OLED's perfect blacks and high brightness, the new panel should offer an exceptional viewing experience.

Compared to conventional OLED panels with a single emissive layer, the new tandem OLED panel offers higher brightness at the same power consumption and a longer lifespan. At the same brightness level, the newer display can consume less power, which could result in longer battery life.

The first laptop to use the panel is the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition, and it received VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification on July 8, 2026. Several other laptop brands, including ASUS, Dell, and MSI, are also working on laptops with the same OLED panel and are expected to unveil them in the second half of this year. Samsung could use this panel in its next-generation Galaxy Book laptops.

The new panel will be showcased at Samsung Display's booth during K-Display 2026, which will take place at COEX in Seoul, South Korea, from July 22 to July 24, 2026.
