All the things you can do with Samsung’s AI smart glasses

All the things you can do with Samsung’s AI smart glasses

Samsung revealed more information about its first AI smart glasses during today's Galaxy Unpacked event. The company calls them “Intelligent Eyewear,” and they will be available in multiple designs and styles from partners Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. But what can you do with them?

Let us look at what we know so far.

These smart glasses run Google's Android XR operating system and can pair with an Android phone. They can be controlled through the paired phone, voice commands, or taps and swipes on touch-sensitive areas on the temples. They are purpose-built with Gemini Intelligence in mind and have a built-in camera, speakers, and microphones.

You can use Gemini on these glasses for the following tasks:

  • Capture photos and videos: You can capture high-resolution photos or short videos with a tap. You can also control the camera if you are wearing a Wear OS-powered Galaxy Watch.
  • Calls: You can take voice calls and share what you are seeing with another person on a video call through Google Meet.
  • Text messaging: You can send text messages and have Gemini read messages received on your phone.
  • Live language translation: You can translate languages in real time during conversations using the built-in microphones and speakers. You can also use the camera to show Gemini text on a poster, paper, or another object and ask it to translate the text into a language you understand.
  • Hands-free navigation: You can ask Gemini for real-time guidance based on your location and Google Maps integration. For example, you can ask for help finding a route or identifying nearby landmarks, such as buildings and monuments.
  • Meeting notes and whiteboard summaries: You can take a photo of information written on a whiteboard during a meeting and ask Gemini to organize or summarize it. You can then save the information in Samsung Notes or Gemini Notebook.
  • Asking general questions: You can ask Gemini general questions, just as you would on a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. You can also ask follow-up questions, and Gemini will remember the context and provide more information.
  • Summarizing long messages: Gemini can summarize long messages received on your phone and read the summaries to you through the smart glasses' speakers.
  • Listening to music: You can listen to music through the smart glasses' speakers using Spotify or YouTube Music.
  • Booking a cab: You can book a cab through Uber using only your voice.
  • Ordering food: You can ask Gemini to order coffee or food through DoorDash.

You may be able to do more with these smart glasses in the future, as more first-party and third-party app integrations are released.

Samsung claims that its smart glasses can last up to nine hours on a single charge. The bundled carrying case can provide up to seven additional full charges. In theory, a fully charged pair of glasses and its charging case could last nearly a week with moderate use.
