Samsung reportedly planning to launch a smartphone with a rollable screen

Samsung reportedly planning to launch a smartphone with a rollable screen

Over the past few years, we̢۪ve seen plenty of futuristic display panels from Samsung Display, including dual-folding, rollable, and stretchable displays. However, Samsung has so far only used foldable OLED panels in its smartphones. In the future, though, the South Korean firm reportedly wants to launch a phone with a rollable screen.

According to a report from Money Today, Samsung Display is in advanced discussions to supply rollable OLED panels to Samsung MX (Mobile eXperience) for a rollable smartphone that could launch in the first half of 2028. If this information is accurate, Samsung could unveil its first rollable phone during the tenth anniversary year of its foldable smartphone lineup.

Market research firm Omdia expects Samsung̢۪s rollable phone to feature a 10-inch OLED panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 440ppi, making it ideal for productivity and video consumption. It will blur the lines between a phone and a tablet.

A Samsung Electronics executive reportedly said, “Internally, we are developing a rollable phone with a target launch date in the first half of 2028, and there is a high possibility that Samsung Display panels will be adopted.”

Samsung Display has reportedly set a goal of securing leadership in the next generation of smartphone form factors after dominating the foldable smartphone market for years. Industry insiders believe that companies with technological leadership and a strong supply chain will have an advantage in the emerging rollable smartphone market.
