Samsung has been hinting at the possibility of its Galaxy Watch smartwatches getting Micro LED displays since 2023. That still hasn't happened, but it may not be that far off now.
A new report out of South Korea claims that Samsung is constructing a new facility for the production of Micro LED displays that will be used for its smartwatches.
Mass production could begin next year
Samsung Display is reportedly building a production facility for Micro LED displays meant for smartwatches. The possibility of mass production will be considered once the test production line is up and running.
It appears that no final decision has been made as yet on whether or not mass production of these displays will be done. Samsung may want to see the results of test production first, and whether there exists demand from customers, which will include the company's own mobile division that makes the Galaxy Watch devices.
Manufacturing equipment will reportedly be installed at the facility in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do, this year. If all goes according to plan, there's a possibility that Samsung Display may begin mass production of smartwatch Micro LED displays by the second half of next year. This would be just in time for Samsung to introduce this significant new upgrade with the Galaxy Watch 10 series.
Apple has flirted with the idea of Micro LED displays for the Apple Watch as well, but it's believed to have given up on the idea due to technical difficulties. Samsung Display has an edge when it comes to advanced display manufacturing, so if anyone can do it, the Korean giant certainly can.
