Hey Apple fans, Samsung’s already got your next big thing!

Next week will be great for Samsung fans. The company is going to unveil its new Galaxy Fold, the seventh generation foldable phone, aptly named the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Based on all of the leaks so far, it's going to be one of the biggest upgrades yet for the series.

Samsung's focus has been on showcasing its ability to deliver a premium user experience in a slim form factor, highlighting its engineering prowess and technical superiority. Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge was the opening act, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the star of the show.

The latest rumors claim that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be just 8.9mm thin when folded. That's almost the same thickness as the Galaxy S25 Ultra or the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This is a significant improvement over the Galaxy Z Fold 6 which measures 12.1mm thick. Samsung's upcoming foldable phone is over 26% thinner than its predecessor, a significant improvement in just one iteration.

The meaningful improvements don't just end here. While the cover display on previous Galaxy Z Fold models were taller, they weren't as wider as they should have been to allow for easy one-handed use. Samsung has taken customer feedback into account and reports suggest the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will have a noticeably wider cover display.

This is something that millions of people across the globe will benefit from. Even though there are many companies that make foldable phones now, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the only truly worldwide foldable phone.

Most Chinese companies are unable to sell their foldables in the US and other markets, while companies like Google that offer foldables in the US don't have the same footprint as Samsung does for its foldables across Europe, Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East.

So, why should iPhone owners care? Many of them have already been waiting for Apple to finally enter the foldable arena. Rumors suggest that Apple is going to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026, and the company will reportedly buy foldable display panels from Samsung Display for the device, but that's not the only reason to keep in mind.

Much of what Apple will tout as the next big thing in its smartphone evolution will be offered by Samsung this year with the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Whether that's best in class hardware, materials like titanium, advanced camera sensors, improved durability, multi-modal AI or software features that take full advantage of the foldable form factor, there's really no need to wait until 2026.

With the Galaxy Z Fold 7 setting a benchmark for slim and powerful foldable phones, Apple will likely aim for a similarly sleek profile and feature set for its first foldable iPhone set to arrive next year. So why should an Apple fan wait until then when Samsung's already got their next big thing ready to go!

Samsung will push the envelope further on foldable design and functionality with next year's model. It's been in the foldables segment since 2019 and with the years of experience it has already amassed coupled with its global reach, there is little doubt that Apple will be playing catch up with Samsung in foldables for the foreseeable future.
