Galaxy S25 FE gets closer to the finish line but should we care?

Samsung's next Fan Edition smartphone is one step closer to its debut. Whether or not we should be excited about the Galaxy S25 FE's eventual release is still up for debate, but for what it's worth, Samsung is working on it.

More specifically, Samsung has started testing the Galaxy S25 FE's One UI software, as confirmed by data recently found on the tech giant's firmware servers (via @Alfaturk16). The phone carries model number SM-S731B, and the test firmware is identified by version S731BXXU0AYFB.

The leak doesn't mention the One UI version outright, but everyone expects the Galaxy S25 FE to go on sale with Android 16 and One UI 8 out of the box.

Speaking of release, Samsung hasn't mentioned anything yet, but we are likely to see the Galaxy S25 FE on store shelves before the end of the year. This recent firmware development lends more credibility to this tentative time frame.

As to why we're not all that thrilled about the S25 FE just yet, it's because of the rumored hardware. According to previous leaks and online benchmark findings, the Galaxy S25 FE may disappoint with its chipset choice. The next Fan Edition phone may use the same chip as the Galaxy S24 FE: the Exynos 2400e.

On the bright side, at least one of the phone's cameras might get an upgrade. The Galaxy S25 FE appears to feature a 12MP front-facing sensor, up from 10MP.

Furthermore, early Galaxy S25 FE renders indicate that the phone could have thinner display bezels. Samsung might not bring massive improvements to the internal hardware but could instead focus on refining the Fan Edition design this year. This remains to be seen. The leaked renders were fan-made rather than official, so they might not be entirely accurate.

All in all, the Galaxy S25 FE has so far been a mixed bag based on the data that has surfaced so far. Either way, Samsung is moving forward with its development, as evidenced by today's leak. The company should bring the Galaxy S25 FE to the market this year. It's unclear when, but the S24 FE became official in September and went on sale in October 2024.

We suspect that pricing will play a critical role in how the next Fan Edition phone will be received by the market at large. The S24 FE debuted for $649 in the USA and €749 in Europe. However, the S24 FE had a better chip than the S23 FE.
