Samsung has dominated the foldable phone market for the past six years, while its biggest rival, Apple, continues to sit on the sidelines. So far, we've only heard countless rumors about Apple wanting to join the foldable segment with Samsung Display's help, but nothing has materialized yet.
Another rumor is now floating around, hinting at Apple's alleged plans to develop a foldable tablet rather than a foldable iPhone (via @Jukanlosreve). Assuming the rumor is true, Apple wants to release an oversized 18.8-inch foldable iPad Pro. Presumably, Samsung will supply the display.
This gigantic foldable 18.8-inch iPad Pro may also borrow a page from the Galaxy Z Fold. It will be equipped with an under-display Face ID sensor.
So far, Samsung remains the only manufacturer to use under-display camera technology, and the Galaxy Z Fold series is the only one equipped with UDC. Apple will supposedly borrow this concept for its Face ID sensor.
Samsung is in no immediate danger from a revolutionary Apple product
Lastly, the rumor suggests the 18.8-inch foldable iPad Pro is not an immediate threat to Samsung's mobile division. Apple will supposedly release this large-screen foldable device years from now, in 2028.
By then, Samsung will likely expand its foldable device portfolio. In fact, previous rumors state that Samsung may release its first dual-folding phone this year.
Speaking of folding mechanisms, it is unclear if this alleged 18.8-inch iPad Pro will fold in half or if it will have more than one hinge.
Take all this information with a pinch of salt. Apple's plans are seldom easy to predict, particularly when it comes to the company's plans to enter new market segments. Many decisions can change by 2028.
