Galaxy S20 FE 5G now receiving April 2021 security update

The 5G variant of the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition is joining the already sizable crowd of Samsung devices that are rocking the April 2021 security update. Its LTE-enabled sibling received the new patch about as soon as Samsung started rolling it out late last month. Given the nearly two-week gap between these happenings, it’s possible Samsung’s been having more issues with keeping the 5G device up to speed relative to the rest.

But time wasn’t on its side, anyway, seeing how the newest, Snapdragon 865 variant of the Galaxy A20 FE 5G only hit the market in India a few weeks ago.

Are more fan-edition devices on the horizon?

And on the bright side, the April 1st security patch level isn’t the only thing that’s on board of this particular OTA release. That’s according to some decisively vague but equal parts deliberate language Samsung used in the changelog accompanying this download.

The original April 2021 security update for the Galaxy S20 FE shipped with exactly zero user-facing changes beyond  the vulnerability fixes outlined in this month’s bulletin. That’s not the case this time around, though we’re still inspecting the OTA that started arriving to select Galaxy S20 FE 5G units within the last 24 hours.

The deployment was initially focused on the Middle East, though it also made its way to a few Far Eastern countries like Singapore by now. The package in question is designated with release version G781BXXU2CUD1 which can already be downloaded as part of full system images available from our firmware archives.

In the meantime, we’ve been getting ready for the Galaxy S21 Fan Edition, whose launch might happen any day now, and whose marketing materials are already out in the wild.
