Apple's switch to OLED displays for its MacBook Pro creates incredible opportunities for display manufacturers like Samsung Display. The company will need stable supply in large volumes and whoever can provide that stands to make bank.
It's already evident that Samsung Display will be the primarily supplier of OLED panels for the MacBook Air. A new report indicates that things are going very well on the production floor.
Mass production set to begin in the near future
Korean media is reporting that Samsung has hit a projected mass production yield of more than 70% during the trial runs for the OLED MacBook displays at its 8.6-generation OLED production facility in Asan, South Korea. Yields are said to be approaching 80% which is an impressive feat.
The mood is said to be upbeat, highlighting that there don't seem to be any issues in the production process. This would mean that mass production can begin on schedule, likely by June or July this year.
The main customer of Samsung's 8.6-generation OLED panels is said to be Apple, which will likely source the panels in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes for the OLED MacBook Pro. Samsung Display will likely be the only supplier initially, providing Apple with between 2-3 million OLED panels for its new MacBook.
China's BOE is in the race as well to bring its 8.6-generation OLED panels to market, though it appears that the company may not realistically be able to beat Samsung to market.
